While the history of the Americas reaches back hundreds of years prior, conventional United States History courses begin in 1491 with the impending arrival of Europeans to the American continent. By studying the events, individuals, and developments of major periods of U.S. history, students can replicate the same skills and processes used by historians today. Such skills include primary and secondary source analysis, understanding change over time, and historical writing supported by evidence.
For our course specifically, students learn to deconstruct and organize major historical concepts into political, economic, religious, social, intellectual, and geographic thematic categories. The majority of class time is dedicated to instructional lecture, document analysis, group activities, and writing practice. Students will have assigned readings most nights.
