In the past years, I have traveled the world and taught in the United States, China, and Spain. I've taught IB History (HL), AP U.S. History, AP Human Geography, Civics, English Literature, Drama, and more! I am also an avid reader, runner, and juggler. |
My Teaching Philosophy
1. Global Mindedness
In increasingly interconnected societies, students will interact with people from around the world through their careers and hobbies. I want students to view themselves as global citizens, as well as have an awareness and respect for different nationalities, ethnicities, cultures, and thoughts. We must embrace and celebrate diversity in our own classrooms and across the globe. 2. Positive Learning Environment I model the behaviors and characteristics I want students to emulate. As a teacher, I am respectful, eager to learn, and willing to make mistakes. Positive relationships are essential to learning and I create a class community through connection circles, collaborative work, and shared learning experiences. I strive to create a classroom culture where students feel safe, accepted, and valued. 3. Differentiated Instruction Students learn the same material in different ways. I balance my lessons so that students can interact with course content in a format that’s personally meaningful. Simulations, group projects, discussions, lectures, and games are incorporated into a typical unit. Technological tools, like Pear Deck, Padlet, Blooket, and hyper docs, can also be used to foster cooperative learning. Finally, my assessments are varied to equitably measure learning and growth. 4. English Language Learning All teachers are English teachers; I strive to improve students' abilities to communicate through writing and speaking. Students improve their English language ability through reading appropriately challenging texts, participating in discussions, giving presentations to peers, and practicing various writing formats, including essays, reflections, and creative writings. 5. Critical Thinking The purpose of education is to teach students how to think, not what to think. Our world is a complex place and students must understand its nuances to make our global society a better place to live. We don’t avoid tough conversations; instead, we approach them from multiple perspectives to develop a deeper, holistic understanding. 6. Academic Skills Teachers must model and build core skills that can be applied in all academic and professional settings. These skills include time management, organization, self-advocacy, reading strategies, note-taking, and effective writing. The goal is to help students help themselves, giving them the tools to pursue learning within school and beyond. 7. Connections to the Real World The skills students learn in school never exist in a vacuum. Every lesson and activity works to improve students’ understanding of the world around them. I want students to see Social Studies as a lens through which they study humanity and be able to identify examples of how history impacts our lives today. 8. Student Support The high school years are transformative, but also filled with challenges. I work with parents, fellow teachers, administrators, and school support staff to ensure students’ physical and social-emotional needs are met. Every student is dealing with something in their lives and should know where to seek help in the school building. |
